What Causes Blocked Drains? (And How to Prevent Them)

Blocked drains are Nick’s most common call — and most are preventable. Here is what is actually causing them.

In the Kitchen: Grease and Fat

Hot oil poured down the drain cools, solidifies, and sticks to the pipe wall. Over months it builds into a solid blockage that drain cleaner will not shift. Prevention: pour hot grease into a container, let it solidify, bin it.

In the Bathroom: Hair

Hair collects around the drain trap and forms a tangled mass. Prevention: a hair catcher over the drain, emptied weekly.

In the Toilet: Wipes

“Flushable” wipes do not break down like toilet paper. Nick pulls masses of them from blocked sewer lines across Bayside every week. Only toilet paper goes down the toilet.

Tree Roots

The biggest cause of recurring blockages in established suburbs like Brighton, Elsternwick, and Carnegie. Roots find their way into cracks in older clay pipes and grow into a mass that blocks everything. CCTV inspection is the only way to confirm the damage.
