Nick recommends a pressure limiting valve (PLV) on almost every job he attends. Here is why it matters and how to know if you have one.
What Is a Pressure Limiting Valve?
A PLV is fitted to your incoming water supply and caps the pressure entering your home. Melbourne mains pressure can vary significantly — sometimes dangerously high. A PLV keeps it at a safe level, typically 500 kPa.
Why Does It Matter?
Too much pressure wears out tap washers, stresses pipe joints, hammers fittings, and shortens the life of your hot water system. It is also a common cause of dripping taps that keep coming back after repairs.
The Insurance Issue
This is the one that surprises most homeowners. Insurers have denied claims for water damage in properties where pressure was too high and no PLV was fitted. Nick raises this on every job because it genuinely matters — not to pad the invoice.
How Do You Know If You Have One?
Check under the kitchen sink or near the water meter. A PLV is a small brass valve in the water line, often with an adjustable cap. Not sure? Nick checks on-site for any job.
