A burst pipe can cause serious damage fast. Here is what to do in the first 10 minutes while you wait for a plumber.
Step 1: Turn Off the Water at the Main Stopcock
Turn it clockwise until it stops. It is usually under the kitchen sink, near the water meter, or in a utility area. This cuts water to the whole house immediately.
Step 2: Turn Off the Hot Water System
If it is a hot water pipe, turn off the isolating valve near the unit or cut the cold supply inlet.
Step 3: Drain the Pipes
Open all taps to drain remaining water and reduce pressure still flowing to the damage.
Step 4: Limit Water Spread
Move valuables off the floor. Put towels down. If the ceiling is bubbling, poke a small hole at the lowest point to direct water — this prevents a larger section collapsing.
Step 5: Call Nick
Call Nick on 0426 269 058. He covers Brighton, Bentleigh, Hampton and Elwood and is typically 20 minutes away during business hours.
Step 6: Document the Damage
Photograph everything before cleaning up. Your insurer will need evidence.
