Hot Water System: Replace or Repair? How to Tell the Difference

One of the most common calls Nick gets is from someone who already spent money on a repair, only to have the hot water system fail completely two months later. Here is how to know whether a repair makes sense.

The 10-Year Rule

If your hot water system is 10+ years old, replacement usually wins on the maths. A repair buys time — not peace of mind. The unit will fail again, and you end up paying twice. The exception is a well-maintained system with a simple fault like a thermostat or anode rod.

Signs You Likely Need a Replacement

  • Rusty or discoloured hot water — the tank is corroding from the inside. No repair fixes this.
  • Water pooling around the base — the tank itself is leaking. Replace it.
  • Inconsistent temperature on an 8+ year old unit — not worth chasing on an ageing system.

Signs a Repair Might Be Enough

  • Pilot light keeps going out on a gas system under 8 years old — often a thermocouple, relatively cheap.
  • Temperature slightly off on a newer system — thermostat adjustment.

What Nick Does

Nick looks at the age, brand, fault, and cost of repair versus replacement. If a repair makes more sense, he will tell you. “If it was my house, I would not spend $400 repairing a 12-year-old system that is going to fail again in six months.”

Replacement Cost in Bayside

Around $2,500 all-in for supply and installation. Nick carries common units on the van so same-day is usually possible across Brighton, Bentleigh, Hampton and Elwood.
